Our WHY

Square Knot Kids exists because too many young people are surrounded by noise that pulls them away from their potential and too few opportunities that pull them toward it. As Founder and Executive Director Tim “DJ Square Knot” Wilson often says, “We must engage our youth and help change their mindset. And what better way to do that than to allow them to explore their creativity?” Growing up in Brooklyn, New York, Tim personally witnessed how negative street influences can derail even children raised with strong morals and values. What helped him navigate those challenges were community programs and summer camps, safe, affirming spaces that redirected his energy, expanded his vision, and ultimately shaped the man and leader he is today. Square Knot Kids was born from his commitment to pay that forward.

We believe creativity is not a luxury, it is a lifeline. Through intentional exposure to the arts including music and DJ’ing, creative writing, theatre, dance, chorus, poetry, and visual and performing arts, Square Knot Kids engages youth in ways that build confidence, leadership, social connection, and positive life skills while supporting mental well-being. These programs do more than teach artistic techniques; they create pathways for young people to see themselves differently, believe in their own voice, and imagine a future beyond their current circumstances. With the support of parents, educators, community leaders, and funders, Square Knot Kids helps youth carry what they learn into their homes, schools, and neighborhoods, empowering them to become change agents whose creativity, leadership, and service positively impact everyone they reach.
